Richard Moss answered on 12 Mar 2016:

Each astronaut reports the same thing. Earth looks so small and fragile from space. Our atmosphere is so thin and we must take care to protect it.
A lot of the science performed in space is connected to learning more about how we can work together to be smarter in how we use Earth resources and help the environment.
A Japanese astronaut even tested new clothes which do not need to be washed. This stops using washing detergent which is bad for the environment. A small example!
So, yes, I think our work does help the environment. Education, measurement, new technology trials.
