Outside of the space station the astronaut is wearing a space suit. The helmet has a special visor which can be pulled down when the crew is working in sunlight. This protects them from uv light burning the skin or damaging the eyes. Without this protection they would burn much faster than we do on Earth, on a sunny day at the beach.
