Several years ago there was a Russian space station, called Mir. There were several long duration missions to investigate the long term effects of being in space. I think the longest mission was 14 months.
Recently 2 American astronauts spent 12 months on the international space station. It looks like we are going to continue this type of mission to prepare for the long journey to Mars.
